A Kenyan and a Ugandan were arrested in Witbank, South Africa for conning an unsuspecting South African out of R48,500 by falsely misrepresenting themselves as witchdoctors who could multiply his money. This is an old trick that used to happen to people in Nairobi many years ago especially those arriving from the country-side because they were easy to spot and were extremely gullible. The conmen played on these peoples’ fears, hopes, dreams etc.It went something like this – they would draw you in, make you drop a large sum of money, ask you to close your eyes, prayed with you, then you were given a bag and told to go home and perform some ritual at midnight and when you opened the bag, it would be full of money, as much as twice the amount you gave them. Of course, we all know the ending….Believe it or not, some enterprising Kenyan has exported his “skills” to South Africa – Here is the story. It’s funny I just remembered how we used to warn our relatives to be careful when they got to Nairobi. One relative was always adamant that she could never fall prey to such conmen. Alas, one day she arrived at our place minus her money. What made it even more hilarious was that she stammered when she got excited or angry.Ah, the good old days when crooks could actually negotiate with you (they left her with bus-fare), take your money and not harm you physically.
