Wallace Gichere

I never met the man, but I remember that he seemed like he was everywhere at the same time. He let his pictures tell the story and in a way, I felt like I knew him through his pictures. As a young man in Kenya, his was an outlet into what was going on in other parts of the country. His pictures were much more refreshing than the painfully rigid, boring, government-controlled TV at the time.It is sad and ironic that it is not easy to come across any picture of Wallace Gichere on the web. Perhaps one could argue that times have moved on.He was a photo-journalist who pushed the envelope to bring us stories through pictures. ThisĀ  was back when pushing the envelope meant risking your life. He did this with dignity and left a mark in his profession.I think we should honor Wallace Gichere because he has made so much possible for us that we take it for granted.Wallace Gichere, 53, died last Saturday from complications of a fall many years ago during a torture session in the Moi regime.Rest in Peace and thank you for all you did for us.

Wallace Gichere was my hero. Partially, he contributed into my desire of being a photographer. You have fought your fight, and possibly inspired many to continue fighting for what is right, or what they believe is right.God rest you in peace.
