Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope – Kids’ Book

If you are like me, a Kenyan raising children in America, Barack Obama’s candidacy could not have come at a better time for us to show our children what Kenyans are made of and what we can do if we set our minds to it.
America is a blessed place to live, but also extremely challenging especially for the younger generation like my kids because our sensibilities make us straddle between being “Kenyan”, “American”, “African-American” and “Kenyan-American” all at the same time. Sometimes I wonder if I am confusing my children when I tell them that they are Kenyan one day and American the next.
Barack Obama came into the picture and made it easy for us to explain it to our children – we can be all that and still remember where we came from with pride.
I just came across this book called, “Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope” that takes a look at Obama’s historic candidacy and breaks it down for kids aged between 5-9 and thought perhaps it would make a good addition to our arsenal of tools we can use to explain to our kids why they are where they are and even though they may have a funny sounding name, some day they too could be President if only they believe and work hard.
It’s by Gina Gilligan and there is a brief review of it here by MLive.

Habari Yako,
I have a great respect for Obama, but what makes you think that he is Kenyan or even African American?
Mzuri sana,
To answer your question, it’s the same thing that made John F. Kennedy Irish enough to warrant a trip “back home” to connect with his people while still preserving his American heritage.
To the Irish, he was one of their own. Same thing with Barack Obama to us.That does not in anyway take away his American heritage, it only adds to it and makes it richer like it did for John F. Kennedy, one of the greatest presidents of the United States.
I like your theme by the way.
Mambo?????
am happy for obama and his family but what makes the black people think that they have won a free ticket to the US?????????????NB its nothing personal
