Former UN Secretary-General Koffi Annan and former US President Jimmy Carter were yesterday denied a visa to enter Zimbabwe on a humantarian mission into that impoverished African country.

No reason was given for the denial. Former South African President Thabo Mbeki had been mediating on behalf of the elder statesmen with the Zimbabwean government until late Friday night, but the talks failed to materialise into the issuance of visas for the two world dignitaries.

According to a World Health Organisation report released yesterday, approximately 6,000 people have contracted cholera in Zimbabwe due to the broken down healthcare system and 300 people are reported to have died.
