ONE MORE PERSON died Thursday night in Mombasa to bring Kenya’s total number of Cholera deaths to 82, since the outbreak of the disease two months ago.

The latest casualty (name withheld) who hailed from Kisimani village in Mombasa’s northern suburbs, passed away at 10pm EAT.

His death comes even as 87 other people are admitted at the Provincial Hospital as a result of the Cholera outbreak.

Prior to its outbreak in Mombasa, the highly contagious disease, which is passed on by eating contaminated food or drinking dirty water, was reported in Nairobi, Suba, Laisamis, Garbatulla and Moyale districts. Cases are distributed throughout the country, though the Coast outbreak appears severe.

Meanwhile, area member of parliamet, Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, has attributed the outbreak to the failure of the Mombasa Water and Sewerage company, to provide clean, reliable and accessible drinking water. The charge was, however, denied by the Mombasa Water and  Sewerage boss, Iddi Mwasina.

However, speaking to a local radio station in Mombasa, Radio Salaam, the Coast Provincial General Hospital chief administrator, Dr. Heltan Maganga, termed dirty water and sanitation as the cause of the outbreak.

Dr Maganga, said the first patient was diagnosed on June 1 and died the following day.

“Since then, we can confirm 21 cases, out of which nine are undergoing treatment,” he said, adding that the worst affected areas were primarily in the North Coast of Mombasa.

“A team of public health officers has been dispatched to the hard-hit villages of Kisauni, Kongowea, Bombolulu, Maweni and Mishomoroni, where we want to create awareness of proper sanitation practices,” he said.

Latest from Mombasa:

  • The Mombasa District Commissioner, Abdi Hassan has ordered for the immediate closure of all food joints in the affected areas.
