Barely two days after the US announced that it had banned yet another senior government official from visiting the country, Kenya’s Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula has once again defended the government and termed action as unfair and unprocedural.
Washington had earlier this week announced through the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Johnnie Carson, the visa cancellation of a Kenyan top government official who it says is standing in the way of reforms. Speculation has been rife that that official is the Attorney General Amos Wako.
The move has seemingly touched some raw nerves with the Foreign Minister the latest to issue his rebuke:
“It is with regret that an assistant minister of a friendly country walks into our country uninvited, makes fairly unacceptable and reckless statements and then leaves,” Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula told reporters, adding that it was not right.
The minister further wondered how the government official was going to be able to conduct their official duties at the United Nations in New York now that they have been banned.
“When we want to go to the U.N., we shall go to transact international business,” he said. “That is an obligation and our right that nobody can take away under international law.”
The newly banned government official joins a long list of 15 prominent Kenyans who were in September sent warning letters and visa cancellation notices after they were accused of blocking reforms that are desperately needed after post-election violence killed at least 1,300 people last year in the aftermath of the much flawed general elections.
