Sudan: Referendum symbols released

Justice Chan Reec Madut, Deputy chairperson of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission and Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau chaiperson, has released the symbols for the upcoming (January 9, 2011) referendum in Sudan in which voters in South Sudan will decide whether that part of the country secedes and becomes a sovereign nation or Sudan remains a sovereign unified nation.

According to South Sudan Tribune, the verdict on the clarity of the symbols is mixed.

A couple of days earlier, Southern Sudan minister for the southern army (SPLA), Nhial Deng Nhial and his counterpart, Sudanese minister of defense, Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein met in Khartoum to defuse tension in the country as the likelihood of a secession draws near. They assured Sudanese citizens that there is no returning to war.
