Safaricom pre-tax profits down by 23.3%

Safaricom’s pre-tax profits for the fiscal year that ended in March fell by 23.3% to KShs 15.3 billion shillings (US $197 million). The drop has been attributed to financing costs.

Safaricom CEO, Michael Joseph. has told reporters during a conference in Johannesburg South Africa that it’s money transfer service M-PESA, although growing rapidly, is still not profitable.  He expects the service to be profitable on it’s own but did not give a timeline.

Western Union, the US-based global leader in money transfer services and Safaricom have teamed up to test money transfers originating initially from a test location in Reading, Berkshire (UK) to a Safaricom M-PESA account in Kenya. The transfer should happen in within minutes similar to a Western Union transaction.
